Did a brick workout today :-)

My last post about the Four phases of triathlon reminded me that I had not done a brick workout in 9 months.

Today, I wanted to do a long bike, but the weather was crappy. I felt the need for a good long workout, but my leg isn’t ready for a long run yet. So, I decided to do one of my Spinervals bike workout DVDs, followed by a short run. I chose Suffer-o-Ramma, a tough 50 minute interval workout. I laid out my running gear nearby and, when the spinnervals session was over, I quickly transitioned from bike trainer to a run. It was a great workout, and I felt strong during the workout, and very sore afterwards, which I consider a good thing. 🙂

Surgery Update:

Leg feels good now. I tried going out for my short 4.5 mile run 3 weeks after my surgery. It felt horrible, and I ended up walking the last 1.5 miles. A week later, I tried going out running again. I chose a route that I could shorten if need be, and ended up running 6 miles. I was able to finish the run, but felt really weak near the end. 6 miles used to be my (medium distance) tempo run, and now it feels like my long run. I remember reading once that for each day you skip working out, you lose 2 days of training. So, losing a month of running actually sets me back 2 months.

  • hey carol -

sorry to hear you were laid up with surgery! i had big plans to do a brick this weekend, but got the nasty virus that sent our #1 to the ER with a croup cough and our #2 to his pediatrician on thursday. i was hoping to dodge that bullet...

so with a bit more browsing time than workout time this weekend, i figured i better stop in and see your blog. i just bought 'training plans for multisport athletes' as well. im attempting a half IM in arizona (SOMA) in october, so i was going to use the stock plan in the book. i see you have an excel sheet ready to go - i think i am going to use it and tweak accordingly. good stuff!

i think i will post about your excel training plan and link over here.

  • I like your 2006 training plan! You should check out a new DVD called The Tri-Athlete. It teaches you some very sophisticated breathing techniques from ancient Yoga exercises and shows you how to implement them into your workout. Imagine doing your workout atop a 14,000-foot mountain. That's what your lungs feel like! Awesome for endurance!!
