Help Needed

I have two requests for help today.

1) The most important request is for my friend, Rebecca…she is having a terrible nagging pain in her hip just weeks before her Ironman race. Check out her blog an leave her some good vibes, or perhaps you have some words of wisdom for her. Scroll down and look for the picture of the pelvic bones. The paragraph above and below that picture is where she describes her symptoms. You can also read her posts titled “The big experiment”, “I have visions of walking a marathon”, “On the mend” and “Treating myself”. Wow, that is pretty much all the posts currently on her home page! Poor Rebecca!

2) The Rev 3 Tri race has a bike check in the day before the race. I have never done a race like that before. Any tips? Should I cover my seat, handelbars, pedals, etc, to keep them dry and free of bird doo doo? I hope it doesn’t rain on my bike!!! Should I lock my bike to the rack? Would that be dorky – especially since my bike will not be the most expensive one on the block?!

Thanks!

  • Thanks, Carol, for soliciting advice about my hip. You are too nice, and yes, the injury seems to be all that I blog about. I should throw in some good Elena stories or something to break up my complaining :) Maybe if I still have pain on June 15th when I go to the doctor we could discuss a cortisone shot then, thanks BE for the advice! Hopefully it will be healed by then!

The first time we did IMFL we covered our bike seat and brake levers, but I don't think it was worth it. Taking the plastic bags off was just one more thing to worry about in the morning. I figured that since we get on our bikes wet it doesn't really matter if there was moisture on it. They usually have paid security guards to watch the bikes overnight so I wouldn't worry about theft. And like Ginger said, pump up your tires morning off (maybe bring an extra tube in case you find a flat tire morning off, that happened to a friend of ours, but I guess there will be people there to help you with last minute bike needs) and fill your drink system and put any other bottles on your bike. I think it is kind of nice not to worry about lugging your bike to transition morning of.

  • Hi Carol,

Hip pain.. That close to a race, how`s about a cortison injection, if it looks like bursitis? Or a longer lasting peroral anti-inflammatory drug i.e. Arcoxia or something generic?

    Best regards,

    BE

  • Old swim caps also make pretty good seat covers. I wouldn't worry about locking it up. If we have to rack it the day before, I'm sure they will have 24 hour security on watch.

  • Good points. Esp about the bike pump, because I always use one that plugs into my cigarette lighter in my car. I won't be able to use that one! Crap! Thanks!

  • You could cover your seat, if it looks like there will be a lot of moisture in the air, a hotel shower cap works well. Most computers are water resistant/proof so it will be fine. Bring your bike pump in the morning to air up your tires. Bring your food for your bento box and hydration in the morning. Don't worry about theft, they should have people watching the bikes overnight. I wouldn't cover the entire bike, never seen that done. Bring a small towel to wipe down the handlebars if needed. If I think of anything else I will email you.
