Well, my Couch to 5K workout plan is going great. So, I’ve signed up to do the Riverwood Triathlon http://www.setupevents.com in April. It’s a sprint distance triathlon with a 300 yard pool swim, 20k bike and 5k run. It’s a very low key event, from what I can tell, so it seems good for my first “tri”.
I am up to running 2 miles now. In one more month, I’ll be up to 3 miles, which is a 5k. That will give me 2 months to train for the bike leg of the race. I’m not too worried about the swimming, so will probably only minimally train for that. I swam the 500 on a high school swim team, and I even now I easily swim a 300 without getting winded. I’m most worried about the biking at this point, as I am very slow on a bike, and from what I read, if you don’t put a ton of miles training on a bike, you won’t have anything left in your legs for the running on race day.
I’m not going to buy a triathlon bike. They start at $600, and I just can’t afford that. I’ll just use the bike I have, and hope for the best.
My goal is to complete the race before the cutoff time. If I really like triathloning, I might consider investing in better equipment. At this point, tho, I don’t foresee that. Once I do one tri, I think I will start doing 5k’s, maybe work up to a 10k…I mostly just love to run.
