Update June 2008: While Gale’s book has served me well for two years, I have found a book that’s even better! click here: Training Plan

Time to formulate a training plan! Here is my 2006 Training Plan.

It’s an excel file with two sheets, one for running, and one for everything else. I came up with this workout based on the book “Training Plans for Multisport Athletes”. I used the plan on page 121 called “Improved Performance for Olympic Distance TRiathlon: Six Month Plan”. I substituted a half marathon training program for the running part, because I was also training for a 1/2 marathon.

In response to some questions I’ve had about this blog entry, here is more info:

This training plan was for my second tri season, and is not an easy plan to start with. It is an intermediate plan designed to take an athlete from a beginner to a higher level of performance. If you are looking for an easy plan to get you started in the sport, I recommend the plans at www.beginnertriathlete.com or www.trinewbies.com

I didn’t really follow the plan in regards to strength training. For one thing, I didn’t have access to any gym equipment. For another thing, I was dealing with IT band issues, and my Physical Therapist told me not to do any leg excercises, other than what he gave me. In place of the strength training stuff, I substituted my own core workout that had some upper body dumbell work.

Some Code explanations:

HMP = half marathon pace. (I was training for a half marathon too)
AA = Anatomical Adaptation
MS = Maximum Strength
SM = Strength Maintenance
PE = Power Endurance (plyometric workouts)

Any time there is a letter followed by a number: The number refers to Heart Rate zones. (see “Training Intensity” info below)

You can learn about the workout codes by visiting the Training peaks website below, and clicking on the supporting documents listed under Gales photo. Look for the links that say “Workout Codes” and “Stregnth Training” and “Training Intensity”.

Just for future reference, I scanned the printouts of my plan that I had marked up as I went along.? Here they are:
