If you are reading this blog wishing you could get in shape and do a triathlon…my advice to you is to pick an easy beginner event and just sign up for it. Set a concrete goal for yourself, and then train for it. Don’t worry if you are overweight or out of shape. It doesn’t matter. There are plenty of beginners at race events, and everybody is friendly and nobody cares how you look. Even if you don’t “win” the race, you’ll be a WINNER!
Signing up for triathlon races has been such a great motivator for me to work out and get fit. The other day it was really hot out and I didn’t feel like going out to run and swim. But I have a race coming up in 10 days so I had to do it.
PS: Here’s how I find easy beginner triathlon events: I look for events that have a low race cap (under 500 participants) or an event that doesn’t even have an elite category. In North Carolina, we have a whole series of beginner triathlon events called the Endurance Development Series.
