Share the Freakin’ Road

When I ride my bike, I ride on rural roads in my town. They are generally not high traffic roads, but the speed limit is 45 or 55. Oftentimes, these roads don’t have much of a shoulder.

Every time I am out cycling, at least one ass hole passes me at full speed without leaving any room. It pisses me off to no end, and I am so tempted to flip them off. I resist, of course, because I don’t want to give roadies a bad name.

They should put some “share the road” rules on the driving review test that you have to pass every time your license expire. Here they are:

  • slow down when passing a cyclist
  • leave extra room when passing a cyclist
  • better yet, do both!

In certain spots, I have learned to exert my rights on the road: For example, when there is no shoulder, or when going over highway overpasses, or narrow bridges, I look behind me to check for cars, and then I move to the middle of the lane, forcing cars to have to move into the oncoming lane in order to pass me. I think it’s safer, rather than risking being hit off of the bridge and onto the highway below.

Here’s some good share the road tips:
