I stopped doing Pilates because I thought it might be aggravating my neck and shoulder problems. Since core strength is so important for a triathlete, I searched for a replacement. I like the idea of using a stability ball. I was in Wal Mart looking at their exercise stuff, and saw a DVD workout called “My Personal Trainer” Stability Ball Workout. It cost about $12, and is based on Mark Verstegen’s book (which I have and is great!). You can also buy a 65cm stabilty ball at Wal Mart for about $12.

I have been doing this workout for about 10 days and it has done more for my core strength in that small time than several months of pilates did. I can’t believe how much more powerful I feel in my running.

Update December, 2007: I found this DVD online at the GoFit.net website.

I could not find this DVD anywhere on the web to link to. So, I scanned the package so you know what to look for at Walmart. I am just using 1 to 3 pound dumbells at this point. I have a race in a few weeks, and don’t think it’s a good idea to add a great deal of muscle mass right now. I will increase the weights afterwards, and add other strength training later.

I stand by my statement in an earlier blog about my shoulder pain woes: Pain is a gift.
